St. Paul native and his wife are only the third couple in Mayo history to undergo spouse-to-spouse liver transplant

By Kelley Luckstein

On the anniversary of their first meeting, Don Schwabe gave his wife the gift that keeps on giving.

The St. Paul native had a segment of his liver removed at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., on Thursday and transplanted into his wife, who needed the procedure because of bile duct cancer.

It was the third liver transplant in Mayo's history in which spouses were donor and recipient.
