Mayo article helps diagnose man’s ailment

By Kelley Luckstein

A Mayo Clinic research article has helped a Pennsylvania man get a little closer to finding the cause of his long-term suffering. Chris Helner, 21, of Media, Pa. lived for years with extreme exhaustion, disabling migraine headaches, dizziness and constipation…

His parents, Mark and Jeanne Helner, could not find answers until a colleague shared a scientific journal article with Jeanne Helner, herself a surgical nurse in Pennsylvania. The article penned by nurses at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester was published in the research journal "OR Nurse."

The article "Carnitine Deficiency: Implications for OR Nurses" says a person deficient in carnitine because he or she has impaired energy production due to defective proteins.
