Local sports anchor Schmit to start treatment for cancer

By

After being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in May 2008, Joe Schmit was told by his doctor that chemotherapy could be put off for three months so he could enjoy the summer with his wife, Laura, and their three kids. Schmit did exactly that before returning to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester prepared to start treatment. Only that never happened…

Schmit, was told two weeks ago that his cancer had started to move internally and that treatment will be required. "The doctor said, 'I don't know how to tell you this, but I'm not going to treat you,'" Schmit said. "'Your cancer has stalled.'"…

Schmit, 52, will begin chemotherapy Tuesday at Mayo with a two-day session. He is initially scheduled for six rounds of chemo and will head to Rochester every 28 days.
