Risks rise with age, but older moms can maximize their chances of having a healthy baby

One in five women in the United States has her first child after the age of 35, according to the March of Dimes , referring to a 2009 study from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Dr. Myra Wick, a geneticist and obstetrician-gynecologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., reassures older women in The Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy (Good Books, $19.95), for which she was medical editor.
