“Not Dead Yet” – Phil Southerland’s journey from victim to cycling dominance to leading activist

Posted on November 8th, 2011 by

I first met Phil Southerland at a training camp for Team Type 1 back in 2009. I knew that he was diabetic and that he had a goal of being the first diabetic cyclist to ride in the Tour de France, but I was never aware of the whole story and all that he had done to get where he was. Furthermore, there was only a little indication at that time about the path that his advocacy would take, eventually leading him to a position with the International Diabetes Center/Mayo Clinic as it’s Director of Health Care Policy, Planning and Patient Advocacy.
