David C. Utz, Surgeon Who Operated on Reagan, Dies at 87

Dr. David C. Utz, a prominent urological surgeon at the Mayo Clinic who drew wide attention when he performed prostate surgery on President Ronald Reagan in 1987, died on Oct. 30 in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 87… As head of Mayo’s urology department, Dr. Utz (pronounced yoots) operated on Justices Lewis F. Powell Jr. and Harry A. Blackmun of the Supreme Court, the Rev. Billy Graham, Middle Eastern sheiks, Greek ship owners, United States senators and Minnesota farmers. His most prominent patient was President Reagan. Dr. Utz removed the president’s prostate tissue to unblock his urethra.
