Scientists have discovered a highly accurate way to establish which women will develop pre-eclampsia, a condition which can be fatal if left untreated. The key problem so far has been separating which women only have high blood pressure and which have high blood pressure linked to pre-eclampsia. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic, which has hospitals across America, found that certain kidney cells are shed into the urine in women who have high blood pressure who will go on to develop pre-eclampsia but not in others.
