Mayo Clinic CEO John Noseworthy on Friday defended the clinic's decision to build proton beam cancer facilities after the move drew criticism in The New York Times. The newspaper on Tuesday published an opinion piece that used the Mayo proton centers as examples of a "medical arms race" that "could cost taxpayers billions of dollars for a treatment that, in many cases, appears to be no better than cheaper alternatives."
