How the Yips Can Ruin a Promising Sports Career

Steve Hooker is the Olympic pole-vaulting champion. The 29-year-old Australian has jumped the second highest mark in the history of the sport but you may not see him at this summer’s London Olympics. Last month he pulled out of his country’s Olympic trials, not because he is struggling with injury. Instead he is fighting a battle with his mind. Hooker is suffering from the pole vault yips…Experts at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota have likened the yips to cramps experienced by writers or musicians, saying they are more likely to be a movement disorder than the outcome of pressure to perform.
