Every day, thousands of medical specimens are flown in from around the country - and even from around the world - for analysis at a lab in Rochester, Minn. The destination is Mayo Medical Laboratories, a for-profit subsidiary of the Mayo Clinic that claims the status of being the third-largest reference laboratory in the United States. When scientists announced last year that they had discovered a brand new tick-borne pathogen in patients from Minnesota and Wisconsin, the analysis was completed at Mayo Medical Laboratories.
