When her world turned upside down a few years ago, Cynthia Cycon of Park Ridge relied on running to keep her sane. Already having battled ovarian cancer, Cycon was diagnosed with Stage 3 metastasized breast cancer in 2010…She credits a team of doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for not just keeping her alive, but empowering her to run at one of the lowest points in her life. Running enhances fitness, which enables patients to be more durable and able to withstand the rigors of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation, said Dr. Edward Creagan, a palliative care physician and medical oncologist at the Mayo Clinic, who knows Cycon but hasn’t treated her.
