Heart advice: Survivors say always be on lookout for the warning signs of trouble

By

Look at the numbers. Every day, 2,200 people in the United States die from cardiovascular disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention…In 2001, Elmo Aquino was 29. He had an active life as a husband, father and runner and worked for a Jacksonville construction company. But then a case of the flu became something far worse — a virus attacked his heart. He was placed on the heart transplant list…In June 2007, he received a new heart and after a nine-day stay in Mayo Clinic, began his second act…He returned to work and later formed his own construction company. He and second wife Valerie had two children; he has three kids from his earlier marriage. Also, he counsels other Mayo patients who have had or are waiting for a heart transplant.
