Sometimes ambitious initiatives are introduced with some fanfare only to quietly vanish…That didn’t happen with the Mental Health First Aid initiative announced last January, said Susan Salahshor, a physician’s Florida Times-Union newspaper logoassistant at Mayo Clinic and president of the Florida Academy of Physician Assistants, who is one of the facilitators trained to help people understand mental illness and how to deal with it.

Reach: The Florida Times-Union reaches more than 120,000 daily and 173,000 readers Sunday.

Context: Mental Health first Aid is an 8-hour education training program open to all Mayo Clinic employees and the community at large. The training introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders and schizophrenia.
