Open-Heart Surgery Gives News Writer New Valve, New Outlook on Cost of Care

Reporter Gary Jacobson talks with his surgeon, Todd Dewey, at Medical City Dallas on May 24.  For 18 minutes, everything was turned off. No heart beating. No lungs breathing. No machines working in their place. “Technically, you were dead,” surgeon Todd Dewey told me when he made his rounds the next day. “Then we brought you back.”… My wife, Sherry, and I briefly thought of returning to the Mayo Clinic for treatment. But after we met Dewey and did our homework, we changed our minds. There was no need to leave Dallas.
