Rx: More research dollars

By Kelley Luckstein

The pool of money for medical experiments is tight, which will affect the development of drugs, devices and other treatments.

A study released Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) indicates that the rate of increase in funding for biomedical research in the United States has slowed since 2005. The level of funding from the NIH and industry -- the two key engines of research -- actually decreased slightly in 2008, when adjusted for inflation. If the trend holds, it could have troubling implications for research-rich environments like the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic.
