Man walks for life, a fallen friend

By Kelley Luckstein

He's been doing the walk for years now, the Relay For Life that some people think involves only breast cancer patients. But for Jerry Forte of Greeley, it's a relay for all cancer patients to raise funds for the fight against the disease.

Forte, at 71 years old, is one of the “Men of the Relay.” He was diagnosed with prostate cancer 11 years ago, and has been a survivor and cancer-free ever since the tests and operation that saved his life. He was one of the first patients at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and the first surgery there. It was successful, and Forte has been cancer-free for 11 years. “They told me I was a survivor because of the blood test,” Forte said. “They were able to catch it early.”
