Rail bypass called ‘uphill battle from the start’

By Kelley Luckstein

Rochester area lawmakers squared off Friday on a proposed freight rail bypass and a $1 billion public works bill during a luncheon forum…

The bypass was ranked as the top legislative priority for Mayo Clinic and Olmsted County. The clinic is concerned that increased freight traffic so close to the clinic poses a major potential safety hazard and may deter patients from traveling to the clinic…

But Olmsted County Commissioner Mike Podulke said lawmakers need to realize this project is about protecting the future of the state's largest private employer — Mayo Clinic — and that the "importance of this transcends any political career."
