Mayo Clinic plans to take another revolutionary step this year, when it comes to treating patients. Researchers there say the clinic will soon begin to sequence some patients' 6 billion symbol genome, prior to treatment. Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, of Mayo Clinic, says sequencing the entire human genome is akin to when antibiotics were first introduced in medicine. It's that ground breaking. And it's one of the reasons Mayo Clinic will, sometime this year, begin to sequence patient genomes, not for research, but to help better personalize individual care.
