Four months after I walked into a lab at Harvard University and gave a vial of blood to have my genome sequenced, my search to understand my DNA led me to Mark Sanders, a former Indiana firefighter… Sanders finally found a match and received a transplant in October 2010 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He spent three months recuperating at a nearby apartment, accompanied by Diane and their two cats. His immune system weakened during recovery, he became infected with Legionnaire’s disease and almost died.
