Catholic medical mergers raise dilemmas

As Roman Catholic leaders and government officials clash over the proper role of religion and reproductive health, shifts in health care economics are magnifying the tension…In Rochester, in 1986 Mayo Clinic merged with Saint Marys Hospital, previously owned by the Sisters of St. Francis, and with Methodist Hospital in Rochester. Saint Marys has maintained its Catholic identity through a sponsorship board that includes six Franciscan sisters.
