Mayo Clinic Health System is using a technology to eliminate retained surgical sponges. They were the first hospital in Wisconsin to begin using the technology. Dr. Gokhan Anil, Medical Director of Surgical Specialties at Mayo, said losing surgical sponges doesn't happen often, once every year or two, but even losing one is too many. "The best way of dealing with them is preventing them from happening," Anil said.
