By

When a patient enters a hospital, she enters an alien environment. “When I talk to nurses, I tell them ‘We all have busy lives taking care of many patients, but before you walk across the threshold of a patient’s room, pause, take a deep breath, let other things go, and prepare to focus on that patient’s needs,’” said White, director of nursing administration at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, Wis. “I always reinforce the need for them to reintroduce themselves to each patient every time they enter the room.”
