Letter: Another Way to Manage Physicians

By Logan Lafferty

Imagine an individual physician’s helplessness when a national for-profit insurance company dictates how much it will pay for care, with no ability to negotiate…There is, however, another option that enhances professionalism and safeguards the profession’s commitment to doing the right thing for patients. This alternative is found right now in high-performing medical groups such as the Mayo Clinic and the Permanente Medical Group, which are physician governed, and in which physicians collectively take responsibility for the quality and excellence of the care their deliver.
