This is how many pounds you can lose in a year by standing for six hours a day instead of sitting

This isn't rocket science. These are simple calculations of thermogenesis that remind Americans why they should stand more and sit less, said Mayo Clinic cardiologist Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, the senior author of the new analysis. The research, which distills the findings of 46 studies Los Angeles Times Logowith a combined enrollment of 1,184 participants, was published Wednesday in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. "Standing burns more calories than sitting," Lopez-Jimenez said. "That has some implications for long-term weight control, and it has some potential too to be used in weight-control strategies."

Context:  Standing instead of sitting for six hours a day could help people lose weight over the long term, according to a Mayo Clinic study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. In recent years, sedentary behavior, such as sitting, has been blamed for contributing to the obesity epidemic, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, says Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, M.D., senior author and chair of preventive cardiology at Mayo Clinic. Population-based studies report that, in the U.S., adults sit more than seven hours a day. The range across European countries is 3.2 to 6.8 hours of daily sitting time.
